Civil War Photographs

Civil War Re-enactment Photographs

Reid Mason’s Civil War photography includes Civil War sites and re-enactments. These impactful images capture the dedication of the re-enactors, and the worn-torn emotion of the battlefield.

The Randolph County Community Arts Center incorporated his solo exhibit, “Grit & Determination,” in its 2011 Civil War exhibit. The powerful photos from the show specifically highlighted the 2011 Battle of Philippi re-enactment. That same week, the Intermountain Newspaper, based in Elkins, WV ran a large, above the fold article on Reid and his craft.

Reid takes great care to remove anything in the original shot that is not "period correct". In many cases, hours of painstaking work are required. In some cases, Reid uses special compositing techniques, such as adding dirt, grass and trees in areas that were originally shot on city streets. An excellent example of this is his image "Fire Breather". The shot was taken at the entrance of the Philippi Covered Bridge though which a highway passes. The foreground and the area where the canon and soldiers stand are actually highway, with blacktop and a cement curb. Notice that it's impossible to tell that the gravel and railroad tracks were not originally there.

These Civil War photos and others in his collection are available for exhibitions and purchase. Prints are available in any size, as prints only, mounted and matted prints, or mounted, matted and framed.
